All aspiring TJ applicants are required to take two types of essays
Both essays are timed and require math and science middle school content knowledge, well-developed essay writing skills, time management, and test-taking skills.
TJ Math or Science Problem Solving Essay
The TJ Admissions Committee will either give a math problem or a science prompt. Students respond to the problem in an essay format within the 3700-character limit in thirty minutes.
In addition to the TJ Math or Science Problem Solving Essay, the students will need to learn a different type of essay writing genre because they will be given four prompts demonstrating the FCPS Portraits of a Graduate in the form of the TJ Student Portrait Sheet.
TJ Student Portrait Sheet
The TJ applicants will receive four prompts. Students respond to the prompt in an essay format within the 1500-character limit in one hour.
Getting into a competitive school takes a lot of planning, preparation, and goal setting. The contents of the TJ Student Portrait Sheet are like college essay preparation, where students need to angle their essays to show their values and background.
Only the top 1.5% of students per region are selected.

TJ Admissions process is holistic and requires other factors
Some families prepare their students starting from 6th or 7th grade since the TJ Admissions process is holistic and requires other factors like GPA and exceptional STEM extra-curricular activities, to name a few.
