In the latest episode of our Learning by Design podcast, we sat down with Kunal Saxena, a TJ alumnus and proud Masterpiece Academy mentor. Kunal’s journey from student to educator is a story of perseverance, growth, and giving back. This blog captures his inspiring path, filled with valuable lessons for students, parents, educators, and organization leaders.

Young Scholars Circle/The Masterpiece Academy became part of Kunal’s educational journey when he was in 5th grade. We guided him and his younger brother in preparing for TJHSST and Academies of Loudoun. Early on, he discovered that strong communication and writing skills—honed through intensive courses—would be vital for his future STEM career.

Lessons in Resilience: Overcoming Challenges at TJHSST

Kunal’s time at TJ was not without struggles. From the shock of his first summer course to the demanding STEM projects, he quickly learned that setbacks are part of success. His advice to students is simple but powerful: "Embrace challenges, because they make you stronger." He credits TJ for teaching him time management and teamwork—two skills that prepared him not only for college but for life.

From Student to Mentor: Giving Back Through Teaching

After graduating from TJ, Kunal felt a deep calling to return to where his journey began—the Masterpiece Academy. Now a STEM and math facilitator, he finds joy in mentoring students, sharing both his knowledge and his experiences. He believes that every student has untapped potential and that the role of a mentor is to help them see it.

Kunal’s teaching philosophy is shaped by his own experiences as a student. He understands that not every teaching style works for every student and strives to create a personalized learning and encouraging environment. His proudest moments come when he sees his students solve problems and push past their limits, just as he once did.

Returning to the Masterpiece Academy as a STEM and math facilitator, Kunal finds joy in mentoring students, helping them unlock their potential. His teaching style—shaped by his own student experiences—emphasizes personalized learning, empathy, and encouragement.
