The PSAT/NMSQT® is more than a preparatory step for the SAT®; it's a gateway to the prestigious National Merit® Scholarship. This timeline provides a comprehensive guide for third-year high school students, outlining crucial steps and incorporating the latest data from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation® (NMSC®).

October 2023 - PSAT/NMSQT® Testing

About 1,300,000 high school students take the PSAT/NMSQT®, starting their journey towards potential National Merit® Scholarship recognition.

January to March - Post-Test Period

Students await results and should focus on holistic development and increasing or maintaining their GPA. Work with premier institutions like the Masterpiece Academy, including college planning, extracurricular activities, and essay writing.

April 2024 - Identification of High Scorers

NMSC® sends a list of 50,000 high-scoring participants to high schools for verification and recognition.

May to August 2024 - Preparing for the Next Steps

This period is crucial for students to strengthen their academic and extracurricular profiles. Masterpiece Academy's resources and their teachers' expertise can be particularly beneficial during this phase.

September 2024 - Commendations and Semifinalist Announcements

  • Over 34,000 of the 50,000 high scorers are notified as Commended Students, recognized for their exceptional academic promise.
  • Approximately 16,000 students are notified as Semifinalists, the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

October 2024 to January 2025 - Finalist Preparation

Semifinalists work on fulfilling additional requirements, including the completed application, essays, GPA, extra-curricular activities, and their SAT® or ACT® scores to advance to Finalist status. It is crucial to work with the Masterpiece Academy during this time.

February 2025 - Finalist Announcement

15,000 Semifinalists who meet academic and other requirements are notified of their advancement to Finalist standing.

March to July 2025 - Scholarship Announcements

  • Special Scholarships: Starting in March, about 740 recipients of Special Scholarships provided by corporate sponsors will be announced.
  • Merit Scholarships: From March to July, NMSC® announces the 7,140 Merit Scholarship winners, including National Merit® $2500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored, and college-sponsored scholarships.
