The National Merit® Scholarship Timeline

To turn your PSAT® score into scholarship money, you need to understand the timeline:

📌 October (Junior Year): Take the PSAT/NMSQT®, the qualifying test for National Merit.
📌 January – March: Focus on strengthening your GPA and extracurriculars while waiting for results.
📌 April – August: The top 50,000 scorers receive notification. About 34,000 get commended recognition, while 16,000 advance to the semifinals.
📌 September (Senior Year): Semifinalists must complete an application, essay, and confirm their SAT® or ACT® score to advance to finalist status.
📌 March – May: Around 7,580 students are awarded National Merit® Scholarships worth over $33 million.

Types of National Merit® Scholarships

There are four main types of scholarships under the National Merit® umbrella:

1. National Merit® $2,500 Scholarship

2. Corporate-Sponsored Merit Scholarships

✔ Given by companies like Google, Boeing, and AT&T.

3. Corporate-Sponsored Special Scholarships

✔ Available for students who didn’t qualify as National Merit® Finalists but meet a sponsor’s eligibility.
✔ Award amounts vary and often renew annually.

4. College-Sponsored Merit Scholarships

✔ Offered by partner colleges to students who designate their institution as their first-choice school.
✔ Some schools offer full-ride packages, including tuition, housing, and stipends!

How is the Selection Index Calculated?

Each state has different cutoff scores that change every year. Competitive states like New Jersey, California, and Massachusetts have higher cutoffs.
