How to Prepare for the National Bible Bee Competition

The 66 Books of the Bible Visual

The National Bible Bee Competition (NBBC) is an exceptional event that brings together young participants nationwide to showcase their biblical knowledge and memorization skills. Only the top 120 participants per division will be invited to the national competition. With over 12,000 participants last year, about 360 participants and limited alternate qualifiers will advance to the competitive National Bible Bee. Preparing for this competition requires dedication, strategic study, and a thorough understanding of the essential resources provided. This article aims to guide participants in effectively preparing for the NBBC Qualifying Test by leveraging the Discovery Journal, memory passages, cross-references, and original language studies.

Understanding the Qualifying Test

The NBBC Qualifying Test is a crucial step in the competition, assessing participants' knowledge and understanding of biblical texts. According to the Summer Study Participant Guidebook, the test covers several key areas:

  • Discovery Journal: Complete both the NAVIGATE and EXPLORE sections.
  • Memory Passages: Memorize and study the Summer Study memory passages in their context.
  • Original Language Words: Study and memorize Hebrew and Greek words in the Discovery Journal.
  • Cross-References: Study the cross-references provided in the context of their use outside the Discovery Journal.
This shows that cross-references are included in the NBB QT.

Key Study Components

Discovery Journal

  • Complete All Sections: Work thoroughly through the NAVIGATE and EXPLORE sections.
  • Contextual Study: Understand the material that precedes and follows each passage to clarify its meaning, incorporating historical, geographical, and cultural information.
  • Engage Actively: Take notes, highlight key points, and engage with the material actively to enhance retention and understanding.

Memory Passages

Memorizing scripture is a significant part of the NBBC. To support participants, the Masterpiece Academy has created lessons within our Learning Management System (LMS) that align with the memory passages. These lessons are designed to help you:

  • Learn & Think: Read around the passage for context, think about its meaning, summarize, and connect it to your daily life.
  • Make & Break: Write and draw on index cards, break the passage into smaller parts, and use songs, mnemonics, or actions to aid memorization.
  • Recite & Repeat: Recite aloud three times a day, mirror recite, record yourself, and repeat for family and friends.

Additionally, here are some tips for memorizing scripture effectively:

  • Daily Practice: Set aside time each day to memorize and review passages.
  • Contextual Understanding: Study the context around each passage to understand its full meaning.
  • Use Mnemonics: Create memory aids such as acronyms, songs, or rhymes to help recall passages.

The Masterpiece Academy's LMS lessons provide a structured approach to mastering memory passages, ensuring participants are well-prepared for the competition.

Original Language Words

Understanding key Hebrew and Greek words can provide deeper insights into the scriptures. Here’s how to approach this:

  • Study Definitions: Focus on the meanings of these words and how they enhance your understanding of the passages.
  • Contextual Usage: Study how these words are used in different contexts within the Bible.
  • Flashcards: To aid memorization, create flashcards with the word, its definition, and an example of its use.

Cross-References

Cross-references enrich your understanding of scripture by connecting different parts of the Bible. The Masterpiece Academy offers lesson tips in our LMS to help Bible Bee students review cross-references effectively. Here’s how to study them:

  • Read in Context: Study each cross-reference in its biblical context, not just as it appears in the Discovery Journal.
  • Create Study Aids: We advise making flashcards and index cards with mind maps and drawings to visualize connections and aid memory.
  • Fun Practice: Engage with our Cross Ref Quest matching game in the LMS for interactive and enjoyable practice.
  • Historical and Cultural Insights: Use resources like the Blue Letter Bible to gain historical and cultural insights into each reference.
  • Make Connections: Look for themes and connections between cross-references and your primary study passages.
